There is at least one symbol, "x" in this case, in file-naming as an indication of a mathematical operator instead of an alphabetical letter and rename wouldn't know about it unless it looks at the rest of the symbols in that segment. The problem with that is that rename does not know the composition of the segment. That just tries to append the letter U to my file name.the file extension does not need to be changed. I personally remember suggesting that the renaming procedure shouldn't look at any symbols after the first one in each segment but that appears to be premature.
